As the name suggests, medical abortions do not involve surgery or other invasive methods but rely on medications to end pregnancy. A medical abortion involves taking the treatment often called 'the abortion pill,' This is not available over the counter and must be provided by a health care professional. A woman seeking a medical abortion can obtain one through a doctor's office or clinic and should expect two or more visits to complete the process, as another drug must be taken to terminate the pregnancy.

The treatment blocks the effects of progesterone, a hormone necessary to sustain pregnancy. Without progesterone, the fertilized egg detaches from the uterine wall, the cervix softens and opens and the uterine lining begins to break down. Two days after taking it, women are given the  an anti-ulcer drug. In small doses, treatment causes contractions in the uterus, helping to expel the embryo. Women typically remain in a doctor's office or clinic office up to four hours after taking the treatment. Most are then released to go home.

Medical abortion is approximately 95% effective. The treatment will cause serious birth defects to this pregnancy. Approximately three weeks later: You must return to the office to confirm that the abortion is complete.

You may experience some or all of the following:
• some cramps
• nausea or vomiting
• diarrhea

Call the Physician if you:
• Soak more than two sanitary pads per hour for 2 consecutive hours
• Bleed heavily for more than 12 hours in a row
• Pass clots larger than a size of a lemon
• Run a temperature over 100.4
• Have severe pain not relieved by pain medication
• Have an allergic reaction to any medication (itching, rash or hives)
• Develop a foul vaginal odor

You should expect your next menstrual cycle four to eight weeks after your miscarriage. If you start birth control pills you will know exactly when your period will begin.
